The Masked Marauders
Hoax band created in 1969 by Rolling Stone rock critic Greil Marcus in a satirical review of their self-titled double bootleg album. Supposedly the band was a super-group featuring Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney (poor Ringo). After the review got the buzz started, Reprise/Deity released the album. Warner Bros. paid a $15,000 advance for real band The Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band to record an album based on Marcus' review. To deepen the parody, "Deity Records" was a one-off label created just for the joke.
Released in late 1969, the record sold over 100,000 copies. Marcus explained, "It was just an attempt to say, 'This is stupid, and let's make it even stupider.'"
Oh, you crazy music industry people.
