Lady Stardust

David Bowie deliberately seemed to have created confusion with the title character of his song Lady Stardust. First of all, the 'lady' in the title is described in male terms. Also, while there are parallels with Bowie's Ziggy Stardust character, Lady Stardust was probably based on Marc Bolan, since the original demo version was entitled "He Was Alright (A Song for Marc)". In the song, Lady Stardust is a singer accompanied by an unnamed band.

People stared at the makeup on his face

Laughed at his long black hair, his animal grace

The boy in the bright blue jeans jumped up on the stage

Lady Stardust sang his songs of darkness and disgrace

And he was alright

The band was all together

Yes, he was alright

The song went on forever

Yes, he was awful nice
