Dr. Doom
Rock superstar from the 1978 young adult novel Dr. Doom: Superstar by T. Ernesto Bethancourt, the first novel in the Doris Fein series.
Real name Danny Breckenridge, he has a death threat against him, and teen detective protagonist Doris Fein has to solve the case.
"Like I said," I went on, "Danny Breckenridge was going down the tubes with the old routine. His bookings fell off, and there was even talk of him quitting the business. Then, all of a sudden, he came up with this new character he played onstage. He dresses in a long black robe with a cowl. He wears dead-white makeup with black circles painted under his eyes. He calls this character Dr. Doom."
"Has he been successful with it?" asked Harry Grubb.
"Sell-out business the past year and a half," I replied.
"And before that?"
"Well, it didn't catch on right off," I said. "A lot of fans were disappointed that he didn't do his old tunes, like Crossing the Waters, The Answer, and Lillybelle. So he broke the act into two parts. First he'd do all his old tunes; then the Dr. Doom stuff in makeup. It pleased both parts of his following."
"Is The Answer that song they used to sing at civil rights rallies?" asked Grubb.
"That's it," I replied. "But lately Dr. Doom has become more popular than any of his old stuff ever was. At My Own Funeral, his new album, is platinum, already."
