Classical clarinetist from the sci-fi short story "Silence" by J. Hunter Holly, published in Fantastic magazine, vol. 14, no. 6 (June 1965).

In a world where everyone is deaf due to constant very loud background noise, music is enjoyed by watching a needle on a meter. Unsatisfied, Vreney has read about hearing music and sounds in his ancestor's diary. He builds a soundproof room to train himself to hear again. Successful, he is the first person to truly hear music in decades. He tries to convince the world how awesome hearing is by building a machine that just wiggles a needle randomly, to show how pathetic existing music is. But everyone just enjoys his new needle-wiggling machine (the Vreney Music Machine) instead, and presumably a lot of "musicians" lose their jobs.

Cue the sad trombone, except no one there would hear it.
