She breaks up with high-school sweetheart Jim Norton to pursue her singing career after graduating. She leaves their hometown of Lorville, and finds agent Ranny Ladd. They date, and she dumps him when she finds out Ladd's not a "forever" kind of guy. Ladd gets her a gig at a dive called the 10 Spot Club. Desperate, she telegraphs Norton who arrives just in time to rescue Muriel from Ladd's advances and rough treatment. They return to Lorville and Jim's successful lumber business and get married.
