From Sherman Alexie's 1996 novel Reservation Blues. The band forms when legendary blues musician Robert Johnson, still running from the devil, visits the Spokane Reservation. He leaves his magical guitar with misfit storyteller Thomas-Builds-the-Fire, who forms the band with fellow Spokanes Victor Joseph on guitar and Junior Polatkin on drums. Flathead Indians Chess and Checkers Warm Water later join the band and provide keyboards and backup vocals. After some early success, their dreams of stardom are crushed and they return to the reservation.
