One of the many fictional jazz outfits created by DJ/producer Madlib in the 2000s. The releases by these 'bands' on Stones Throw Records often looked and sounded as if they were vintage and discovered in a second-hand record store, with pre-printed ringwear on the cover and pre-recorded vinyl crackling in between songs.

The Jahari Massamba Unit first appeared on the 2007 compilation "Yesterdays Universe!" alongside the flagship band in this context, Yesterdays New Quintet. On the compilation, the track "Umoja (Unity)" is credited to The Jahari Massamba Unit Featuring Kariem Riggins Trio. This suggests that the actual musician Kariem Riggins collaborated with Madlib on this track. This was confirmed in 2020 with the release of the album "Pardon My French" by The Jahari Massamba Unit, on which the music was credited to "Kariem Riggins - drums" and "Madlib - instruments".
