Successful touring singer. He comes off Italian, but he's pretending; he's an American and his real name is Sam Pletcher. In town for a series of concerts, he hooks up with fan and singer wanna-be Susan Welch. They hit it off, but then she wants to sing for him, and he's not impressed. She slaps him, and they break up.

He gets a contract with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and "...day after day I read the papers, following his meteoric career." She goes back to old boyfriend Tom Drew.

Manino starts the story singing pop ("A Brown Bird Singing," published in 1922), but turns to opera.
