Poet/bard/minstrel in Homer's poem Odyssey (8th century B.C.). He is at Odysseus's house performing for his wife's many suitors. When Odysseus kills all the suitors, he spares Phemius, and tells him to play wedding songs as loud as he can, to delay discovery of the murders, while Odysseus escapes.
