Swipe in the book 'Tamara Drewe' (2007) with Ben Sergeant on the left
Swipe in the film 'Tamara Drewe' (2010) with Dominic Cooper as Ben Sergeant on the right

British indie rock band from the weekly newspaper comic 'Tamara Drewe' by Posy Simmonds. 'Tamara Drewe' was published in The Guardian from 2005-2007 and republished as a single volume in 2007, basically a graphic novel. It was adapted into a feature film in 2010.

Swipe in the book

In the book, the band has already disbanded when the title character, newspaper columnist Tamara Drewe, meets Swipe's former drummer and songwriter Ben Sergeant in a bar. By that time the music press is all over Swipe, following the rumor that Ben Sergeant left because his girlfriend, and Swipe's singer, Fran Redford had an affair with Swipe's bassist Steve Culley. Now single, Ben falls into the arms of Tamara and becomes his boyfriend. She writes her next column about him, using an alias for Ben. In the quiet village where Tamara lives, Ben causes a stir with his yellow Porsche and his big dog.

Swipe in the movie adaptation

The movie adaptation of 'Tamara Drewe', actor Dominic Cooper adds a little more swagger (and make-up) to the character of Ben. Instead of meeting him in a bar, Tamara encounters him backstage at an open air festival where he just walked out of his last Swipe gig. During the gig, Ben and Steve Culley, now the singer, got into a fight over the Fran Redmond, now the bassist. The song they perform is 'This Is a Low'. The film features another Swipe song, 'Where Are You Now?'
