Thinly-veiled version of real conductor Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957) from the 1936 novel Of Lena Geyer by Marcia Davenport, daughter of real opera star Alma Gluck.

He becomes the conductor of the New York's Metropolitan Opera, conducting the title character.
