After abandoning his pregnant girlfriend at a Wal-Mart, Willy Jack is arrested for unrelated stuff and writes the song "Beat of the Heart" in prison. Upon release, he makes it to Nashville, teams with grizzled agent Ruth Meyers (Joan Cusack), who cleans him up and gives him the stage name "Billy Shadow."
