Otis Skinner played this amateur pianist in the 1914 play The Silent Voice. The play is based on a 1912 short story by Gouverneur Morris titled "The Man Who Played God," and appearing in the January issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine. In the story, the character's name is also Montgomery Starr, but is not a musician.
The play was turned into a film and remade several times, with the main character being renamed several times.
