At first a struggling young thing, top N.Y. session pianist Lou Tanner takes her under his wing and helps train her up to fame. But after two years of success, their argument over when they will get married leads to their break-up. Years later, he's killed on Iwo Jima in WWII, which sets the bulk of the flashback in the 1930s.
