Russian-Jewish composer from "The Melting Pot," a 1908 play by Israel Zangwill.
He immigrated to America after surviving the 1903 Kishinev pogrom which killed his mother and sister.
He composes The Crucible, an "American Symphony" that expresses his hope for a world free of ethnic divisions and hatred. The play popularized the term and concept of America as a "melting pot" of different ethnicities.
