In the early 2000s Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Madlib birthed a whole ecosphere of jazz musician personalities and their fictional bands, releasing all kinds of quasi-vintage material on Stones Throw Records. A typical album of that range came with pre-printed ringwear on the cover and pre-recorded vinyl crackling in between songs. Yesterdays New Quintet was the flagship band that started this family of releases. The first releases of the 'band' came out in 2001.
