He first appeared in 1989, in the "The Good, The Bad, & The Broccoli" episode of The California Raisin Show, which featured The California Raisins. He's led into schemes by his conniving manager Leonard Limabean. Limabean and Lick plant a bug in the Raisins' mansion to steal their newest song, "Baby Love."
He also appeared in their second television special, Raisins Sold Out: The California Raisins II (1990).
His band has a gourd on drums, a green bean playing a chainsaw-shaped guitar, and a melon or grapefruit on guitar or bass.
