A provincial Englishman of small talent, he has come to study music at the Conservatorium at Leipzig in the 1890s. There he meets and becomes obsessed with fellow music student Louise Dufrayer, but she is totally in love with resident musical genius Schilsky. He comes to a bad end.
The novel was adapted into a 1954 film with the title Rhapsody, starring Elizabeth Taylor.
