In the 1980 remake of The Jazz Singer, Yussel Rabinovitch (Neil Diamond) defies his cantor father (Laurence Olivier) to become, well not a jazz singer, but a pop singer with this name.
There's a great scene where he plays his slow tender ballad "Love on the Rocks" to Billy Idol-ish rocker Keith Lennox, who then turns it into a sneering rock song.
