This fictional band became a real one, thanks to the popularity of the Irish-soul soundtrack from the 1991 film of the same name.
It started in the 1987 novel by Roddy Doyle, yet still also titled The Commitments.
In the novel, some of the members go on to form another band, The Brassers.
