Clarinetist "king of swing" from short stories by Robert English, collected in "Strictly Ding-Dong" and Other Swing Stories, 1941.

The stories were adapted into a 1946 film, Ding Dong Williams, with Williams played by Glen Vernon. In the film, his combo is named Ding-Dong Williams' Dixieland 6. His inability to read or write music threatens his job with a motion picture studio.
