Fake musicians who are the focus of the movie remakes of the 1914 play The Silent Voice. The play is based on a short story by Gouverneur Morris titled "The Man Who Played God," and appeared in the January 1912 issue of Cosmopolitan Magazine.
In the short story, the character's name is also Montgomery Starr, but is not a musician. That was added by Jules Eckert Goodman, who adapted the story into the play.
The play was adapted into film four times:

- The Man Who Played God, 1922
- The Man Who Played God, 1932
- Sincerely Yours, 1955
and adapted into an episode of anthology tv series Lux Video Theatre:
