African-American jazz pianist from the 1975 novel Ragtime by E. L. Doctorow, set in Jazz Age New York City. The novel was turned into a 1981 film by Paramount Pictures. In the film, Coalhouse Walker Jr. was played by Howard E. Rollins Jr.
