New Jersey-born contralto prima donna and "well-known adventuress" who was one of only a handful of people to outsmart Sherlock Holmes. While her story is the focus of "A Scandal in Bohemia" (1891), she is also mentioned in "A Case of Identity" (1891), "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" (1892), "His Last Bow" (1917), and possibly in "The Five Orange Pips" (1891).
